The Birdhouse: A West Virginia gardening journal

A low-bloom time (must correct)

After the bulb display of April and May, we enter the dead time until the daisies and monarda start going in mid-June. This baffling dead time in the garden is frustrating.

I planted some things last year to address this dead zone, and they are blooming now, but I see now that they are all the same, understated color (blue/purple). Maybe incorporating more yellow and white will help it pop. Maybe some poppies?

There is some penstemon blooming right now that looks really pretty. I think it’s starting to spread now that I am disciplining the stiltgrass. I played around with my iPhone camera, and caught a cool shot of a bee visiting one of the blooms (up top).

And it was a beautiful weekend even if the garden still needs work.

A pretty sunset all the same.

A pretty sunset all the same.
